The Republic of Macedonia
I. Introduction
In the following pages it’s going to be words about a small country in southeastern Europe- the Republic of Macedonia. Through the sentences it’s going to be revealed a real beauty and rare characteristics of Macedonia, that are the main reason for anyone to come to this country.
The existence of Macedonia can be traced as far back as the time of the Bible, which says that during his first journey out of Asia, St. Paul the Apostle went to preach in Macedonia among the Macedonians…
Nowadays, the Republic of Macedonia is a veritable treasury of culture and art. As hardly anywhere in the world, the region treasures a large number of historical monuments, churches, old books, and other artifacts. Macedonian churches and monasteries have a long tradition. The first Slavic Alphabet and literature also have their roots in Macedonia.
The Republic with about 2,000,000 inhabitants is considered the least developed on Balkan Peninsula but it has beautiful cities, such as the main administrative centre and the capital city of Skopje, amazing sites and many treasuries interesting for people to see.
Often known as “the pearl of Balkan”, the Republic of Macedonia abounds in natural beauties and rarities, with many valleys, numerous hills and mountains. Macedonia is exceptionally rich with water resources. Because of the many tectonic, glacial and man-made lakes, it is called “the land of lakes”. The flora and fauna of the Republic of Macedonia are amazingly heterogeneous. Convenient climate and the rare plant and animal life are ideal for the development of mountain tourism.
Since ancient times Macedonia had an exceptional strategic position on the Balkan Peninsula and Southern Europe. It‘s central position on the Balkans provides excellent communication, strong connections with other countries, good traffic and transportation.
Her development increases and tourism becomes a big part of economy in Macedonia. If that continues, with such development and if the Republic of Macedonia uses all her opportunities, it has good odds to become one of the biggest tourist centers.
